I started my internship with the Oklahoma City All Sports Association on May 14 with the Big 12 Softball Championship. This event was my first opportunity at experiencing the internship. Along with meeting the other interns, I met the entire staff who I will be working with this summer.
Participating in all four of the sporting events showed me how much work goes into hosting a sporting event. I learned that everything runs on a schedule, however you must be flexible in case the schedule gets off track. There are a lot of crucial components that are included in sporting events, such as the ticket office, merchandise tent, program sellers, media and the media hospitality tent. A lot of people think that sporting events are only about the game, but the reality is that the behind the scenes work is important too.
I learned that teamwork is especially important in this industry. Each event is a production that cannot be successful by the work of one person alone. Every staff member has their own responsibilities that are crucial for the day of the game. The entire company must be on the same page in order to have a successful event. The Women's College World Series was the biggest event with 7,000 softball fans who attended. I enjoyed seeing the event come together as I interned every day.
